Caught His Eye

Mr. Bennett slipped away from the thrum of the prom, the bass still vibrating faintly through the gymnasium floor above. He needed a cigarette. The basement was quiet, fluorescent lights buzzing over concrete and stacked chairs. He found a spot by a heavy door marked DO NOT OBSTRUCT and lit up, the first drag settling his nerves.

Something glinted near the door. A smooth, featureless object—neither machine nor sculpture—sat where nothing should have been. The Trait Swapper. He stepped closer for a better look.

The world tilted.

When it righted itself, Mr. Bennett was gone. In his place stood an eighteen-year-old girl in a metallic party dress: dramatic turquoise puff sleeves, a fitted ruched torso, a dropped waist crowned with a large magenta fabric rose, and a flared two-tiered skirt—blue on top, metallic magenta at the hem. The cigarette was still between her fingers. She stared at her gloves, the unfamiliar weight of the dress, the sudden absence of his suit and the decades that had come with it.

Footsteps echoed on the stairs. Mrs. Fletcher appeared, scanning the basement with the practiced suspicion of a veteran chaperone. Her eyes landed on the girl and narrowed.

“Young lady. Students are not permitted to smoke. Anywhere. Put that out and come with me.”

There was no room to argue. The former Mr. Bennett—now simply a senior in a stolen body and a borrowed name she had yet to learn—stubbed out the cigarette and followed Mrs. Fletcher upstairs. The prom lights, the music, the laughing faces all felt distant and wrong. She was escorted out of the building and sent home.

Monday morning the principal’s office smelled of coffee and old paper. The girl sat in the hard chair while the principal reviewed the report. Smoking on school grounds. A clear violation. Detention was mentioned. A stern lecture followed. Yet when the paperwork was finished, the principal sighed and closed the folder.

“You’re lucky this is your last week. You’re still graduating with your class. Don’t make me regret the decision.”

She nodded, rose, and walked out into the hallway where her classmates—strangers who somehow knew her—called her name. Somewhere behind the new face and the turquoise sleeves, Mr. Bennett understood that the Trait Swapper had not simply changed his body. It had rewritten the story around him. And the story, it seemed, intended to let her graduate.
